The most important museum institution in the Republic in terms of heritage and scientific prestige is the National Museum of Archaeology and History of Moldova. It impresses with unique architectural style through the wealth of the exposed elements and the enormous space from the inside. Located in the heart of the capital, its diversified typology illustrates the history and transformations of Moldova during centuries.

DESCRIPTION

Address: Chișinău, 31 August 1989 street The State Museum of History of MSSR was created on the basis of the Republican Museum of Military Glory. Its location remains in the historical building of the former boys' gymnasium No.1 in Chișinău. The museum was founded on 21st of December 1983, but officially opened in 1987. The old building was demolished and replaced with a new one (the construction lasted from 1980 to 1987), which kept only the external appearance of the historical monument, and the eclectic and decorative ambience of the assembly hall of the gymnasium, restored in three rooms from the new building. The museum is a contemporary monumental construction, with a floor and a ground floor,  facing the street of 31 August 1989. It includes 12 exhibition halls with a total area of 5700  square meters. The scientific activity is coordinated by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The diorama “Iasi-Chisinau operation” is an action scene of a fight during the Second World War - a historical collection. The heritage of the museum is of 15 941 pieces, consisting of: Photos (original and photocopies), illustrated postcards (XIX-XXI centuries), banknotes, medieval coins, ancient - Greek Geto-Dacian and Roman medals, original parts of weapons, musical instruments - keyboards, furniture - chairs and armchairs, tables, cabinets, sofas . Also maps and plans, dating back to XIX-XX centuries, flint tools, carved and polished stones, weapons (axes, spearheads and spears, swords etc.), dishes and utensils. It includes 22 292 pieces coming from excavations, discoveries and acquisitions, donations and transfers, which are representative of Paleolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and medieval period. The museum has memorial objects of historical value, integrated chronologically between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, that are designed in order to reconstruct the atmosphere in which they lived and create some cultural, historical and political Moldovan personalities - in exhibitions.
