Founded in 1939 by Alexandru Plămădeală, this museum has captured the attention of many cultural persons who have entrusted their masterpieces, and certainly many visitors appreciated this tourist complex as being one of the nicest places to visit. In 1947, the professor of Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Pavel Şillingovski, has left a testament consisting of an impressive collection of graphic works of European and Russian masters from the XVII-XIX centuries. In 1939, the sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală selects around 160 works of Bessarabian and Romanian artists, in order to set the first picture gallery in Chișinău. The inauguration of the picture gallery took place in November 1939, the first art museum being opened. It did not last long, because during the war of 1940-45, the works from the gallery were loaded into wagons and taken to Harkov (Russia) and were, subsequently, lost. With time, the museum collection was completed with old icons, works of painters from Rusia, Bessarabia, Western Europe, Japan, India, China. There you can find european paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (F. Baucer, P. Gober, Rembrandt, O. Renuap, P. Gavarni). Nto less interesting is a collection of paintings from Russia - V. Perov, I. Repin, A. Savrasov, I. Ivanov, I. Aivazovskii, I Shishkin. There is also a collection of great value – pictures of Japanese masters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (Utagawa Kunisada, Ando Hiroshige, Utamaro Kitagawa). Currently, the heritage of the Art Museum consists of over 39,000 works that reflect the imitative arts from the XV-XXI centuries.
